Foxy Brown

  • Used - Like New
She's brown sugar and spice...and if you don't watch it, she'll put you on ice! Delivering a performance worthy of "the Queen of the genre" (Los Angeles Times), Grier portrays one of the screens first action heroines with humor, sensitivity and steely determination. This electrifying revenge thriller explodes with all the sex appeal and cooler-than-cool attitude of its irresistible leading lady. Foxy Brown (Grier) has found her soulmate in an undercover narcotics investigator, but when he is brutally murdered, she swears vengeance against the crime ring responsible. Posing asa call girl to gain access to the ring's inner circle, Foxy discovers just how high the corruption extends, igniting a blistering war that takes her from the city streets to a remote drug laboratory to a breathtaking midair battle behind the controls of an airplane! But the most startling confrontations a! re yet to come as she schemes to bring down her boyfriend's killers in ways they never could have imagined.Pam Grier, the voluptuous queen of blaxploitation movies (and the foxy title character of Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown) reigns supreme in this kick-ass action flick. Bodacious nurse Foxy takes the law into her own hands after her main squeeze is murdered in cold blood. The standard revenge plot of Foxy Brown moves along on fast-forward, and the violence ratio (some of it quite gruesome) is high. Director Jack Hill, a master of the low-budget drive-in movie (Switchblade Sisters), made Coffy with Pam Grier the year before. This one's not quite as much fun, but it is decidedly kinkier, and the parade of 1970s fashion crimes is mind expanding. At one crucial moment Foxy saves herself by pulling a concealed revolver out of her mighty Afro--absolutely one of the high points of blaxploitation cinema. --Robert Horton Pam Grier, the volupt! uous queen of blaxploitation movies (and the foxy title charac! ter of Q uentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown) reigns supreme in this kick-ass action flick. In 1959 South Korea was mired in poverty. By 1979 it had a powerful industrial economy and a vibrant civil society in the making, which would lead to a democratic breakthrough eight years later. The transformation took place during the years of Park Chung Hee̢۪s presidency. Park seized power in a coup in 1961 and ruled as a virtual dictator until his assassination in October 1979. He is credited with modernizing South Korea, but at a huge politi! cal and social cost.

South Korea’s political landscape under Park defies easy categorization. The state was predatory yet technocratic, reform-minded yet quick to crack down on dissidents in the name of political order. The nation was balanced uneasily between opposition forces calling for democratic reforms and the Park government’s obsession with economic growth. The chaebol (a powerful conglomerate of multinationals based in South Korea) received massive government support to pioneer new growth industries, even as a nationwide campaign of economic shock therapyâ€"interest hikes, devaluation, and wage cutsâ€"met strong public resistance and caused considerable hardship.

This landmark volume examines South Korea̢۪s era of development as a study in the complex politics of modernization. Drawing on an extraordinary range of sources in both English and Korean, these essays recover and contextualize many of the ambiguities in South Korea̢۪s trajectory from po! verty to a sustainable high rate of economic growth.

Han Kiju, a pulp fiction writer, needs to write a new best seller every month for his publishing house. Still reeling from his youth experience as a volunteer infantryman in the South Korean Army's highly decorated White Horse Division, which fought alongside American troops in Vietnam, Han suffers a textbook case of Vietnam syndrome. The burdens of guilt and alienation make his private life barren and constantly sabotages his career and marriage.

Using flashbacks to the combat fields of Vietnam ! the film depicts, in a graphic way, how Han and his frontline infantry experienced the war uniquely as Asians yet felt the same nightmare of fear and meaningless sacrifice as their American counterparts.

While Sgt. Han's platoon is being decimated by an unseen Viet Cong enemy during a long range reconnaissance mission behind enemy lines, one of his fellow soldiers slips into insanity causing untold carnage and death. A reunion with this man forces Han to confront the past and the most painful events of his life.

Mother is a devoted single parent to her simple-minded twenty-seven-year-old son, Do-joon. Often a source of anxiety to his mother, Do-joon behaves in foolish or simply dangerous ways. One night, while walking home drunk, he encounters a schoolgirl who he follows for a while before she disappears into a dark alley. The next morning, she is found dead in an abandoned building and Do-joon is accused of her murder. An inefficient lawyer and an apathetic police force result in a speedy conviction. His m! other refuses to believe her beloved son is guilty and immediately undertakes her own investigation to find the girl's killer. In her obsessive quest to clear her son's name, Mother steps into a world of unimaginable chaos and shocking revelations.Just as South Korean director Bong Joon-ho's previous film, The Host, subverted the traditions of the giant monster movie to examine the effects of a crisis on a unique family, his latest effort, Mother, embraces the tropes of the murder mystery for an unsettling and affecting story of parental love taken to its extreme. Popular South Korean television actress Kim Hye-ja gives a powerful performance as a downtrodden acupuncturist whose mentally challenged son (Korean A-lister Won Bin) is accused of murdering a local schoolgirl. Bullied into a confession by the local police (led by Yoon Je-moon of The Host), the young man faces incarceration at a mental hospital unless his mother can discover the killer's true ! identity. Her inquiry leads her into classic noir territory, w! ith perc eived truths blown apart at every turn; in typical Joon-ho fashion, these discoveries are marked by moments of shocking violence, dark slapstick humor, and moving familial drama, which come together in a genuinely unique perspective on the nature of truth and commitment. The official South Korean submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, Mother is yet another entry on a growing list of exceptional motion pictures from one of the international scene's most intriguing filmmakers. --Paul Gaita

Tell Me On A Sunday by Denise Van Outen

This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

This 2003 cast recording is an update of a song cycle by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Don Black. First produced in London in 1982 as half of an evening titled Song and Dance, Tell Me on a Sunday is pretty much a one-woman show and a vehicle for a versatile singer with strong acting skills (Bernadette Peters won a Tony for it in 1985). This time, Denise Van Outen, a Chicago alum, takes on the role of the young British woman who goes to New York in order to get over a broken heart. Overall, this is one of Sir L! loyd Webber's most rocking scores, even if too often the results sound like the work of someone desperately trying to sound au courant. "Haven in the Sky," for instance, is a quasi-dance track with a trip-hop beat. When the heroine goes to L.A., the tone turns to folk-rock ("Capped Teeth and Caesar Salad"), but the composer is defeated by Black's clunky lyrics. Kudos to Van Outen for infusing perky charm into even the tritest moments. --Elisabeth VincentelliWhen Denise found out she was expecting Betsy, she went straight out and bought a wide range of titles, from celebrity mumoir to practical guides to eating and exercising properly. But all of these books were missing something - the element of fun! BUMPALICIOUS is much more than just a pregnancy diary - as well as Denise's own personal experiences, you'll also find helpful hints and tips, non-judgemental advice, nutritional and technical advice from food and fitness experts and, above all, a book that encou! rages you to relax and ENJOY the excitement of pregnancy and t! he first few months of being a new mum. The road to giving birth may be a bumpy one but it's not all swollen ankles and morning sickness. A frank first-hand account of what to expect when you're expecting, reading BUMPALICIOUS is like sitting down and having a good old natter with Denise, from the comfort of your couch. This is a truly exceptional item! Feast (Unrated Edition)

  • From executive producers Wes Craven, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Chris Moore comes the incredible horror extravaganza Feast (Harry Knowles, Ain t It Cool News), whose production was chronicled on the third season of Bravo s hit reality series Project Greenlight. When a motley crew of strangers find themselves trapped in an isolated tavern, they must band together in a battle for survival against a
Executive-produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney (Ocean's 11, Ocean's 12), UNSCRIPTED is an innovative half-hour comedy series that fuses reality and fiction to chronicle the lives of three struggling young actors as they navigate the rough waters of show business. Starring Krista Allen, Bryan Greenberg and Jennifer Hall, essentially playing themselves, and co-starring screen veteran Frank Langella as Goddard Fulton, a noted actor who leads them in an acting workshop at Los Angeles' fabled ! Tamarind Theater, UNSCRIPTED offers a revealing look at the sometimes raucous, often disillusioning world of the fledgling actor.

DVD Features:
Episodic Previews
Episodic Recaps

Unscripted is to cable TV as A Chorus Line is to Broadway: a look at the performers in the smaller roles. Produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney (who also directs), the HBO comedy follows the trials and tribulations of three real-life actors, Krista Allen, Jennifer Hall, and Bryan Greenberg. The 10-part series isn't documentary, soap opera, or sitcom, but a combination of the three. It's up to the viewer to figure out where one ends and the other begins. Complicating matters is the character of Goddard Fulton (Frank Langella, Good Night, and Good Luck), an acting coach--and celebrated lothario--trying to help these young thespians step up their game.

In the pilot, Allen stops by The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn to ! talk about her latest role: tequila spokesmodel. It may not be! acting, but she has a son to support and it's an improvement on her softcore Emmanuelle past. In the same episode, Greenberg has a walk-on on ER and Hall has a stand-in on The George Lopez Show. In subsequent episodes, Allen guests on Jake in Progress and Hall does stand-in and background work on Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Constantine. Greenberg hits the greatest heights when a recurring role on One Tree Hill leads to a starring role in Prime--opposite Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. All go to humiliating auditions for parts they don't get.

As expected from a Clooney/Soderbergh production, stars abound, including Noah Wylie, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Hank Azaria, Keanu Reeves, and Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which featured Allen and Hall). Like improvised predecessor Curb Your Enthusiasm, most play themselves. Despite greater critical acclaim, Unscripted, like K Street before it, ! was not renewed for a second season. It deserved better. --Kathleen C. FennessyAt a rural bar, a motley bunch of patrons struggle to survive a ravenous family of flying beasts bent on devouring every last one of them.In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gu! lager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's driv! e is thw arted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul Gaita

Alice in Wonderland

  • ALICE IN WONDERLAND (DVD MOVIE)
Unlike her ubiquitous brothers, psychologist and philosopher William and novelist Henry, Jr., Alice James (1848-1892)-the youngest child and only daughter of the wealthy, mercurial, and eccentric New Englander Henry James, Sr.-passed much of her brief lifetime at home, largely isolated from society, unafforded the opportunity to receive extensive formal education or to attain the public success or recognition of her famous siblings. She was, in many ways, a victim of a society that severely circumscribed the lives of women, and that deprived even privileged and talented women like Alice of their intellectual, spiritual, and emotional-as well as physical-freedom. Indeed, James spent many of her years as an invalid, afflicted with a depressive malaise that left her constantly trying to recover a sense of identity and integrity.

Yet, within the pages of ! the journal she kept during the last four years of her life, Alice James emerges neither as a downtrodden casualty of her era nor as merely an interesting footnote to the illustrious James family saga, but rather as a formidable and triumphant individual in her own right. Far from displaying any wholesale acceptance of the ruling assumptions about her gender-or, for that matter, about anything else-James's diary reveals a vigorously opinionated, intellectually curious, extremely gifted writer renegotiating her position within the discourses of her time.

Long unavailable to students, scholars, and the general reader, this volume reprints Leon Edel's 1964 edition, which is widely accepted as the most faithful reproduction of the original diary. A new introduction by Linda Simon draws extensively on recent scholarship to illuminate James's role both in the context of her family and nineteenth-century culture. This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's stor! y originally produced for NBC-TV. Dreading a singing recital ! at her p arents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies. Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice constantly changes sizes. The highlight is Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, a seamless mix of cat and comic. Martin Short as the Hatter and Mirandra Richardson as the Queen of Hearts seem to be having the times of their lives. This is not the definitive version of Carroll's tale, and, like the popular Disney animated version! , combines some elements of Carroll's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. It is perhaps better viewing for the fan that has seen another version of the tale or read the book. --Doug ThomasNOTE: This edition has a linked "Table of Contents" and has been beautifully formatted (searchable and interlinked) to work on your Amazon e-book reader, Amazon Desktop Reader, and your ipod e-book reader.

Bleak House (Special Edition)

  • It has always been recognized as one of Charles Dickens's literary masterworks, but this Bleak House is now fast moving, daring, gripping television. Here is the murder mystery, the love story, the comic genius and the tantalizing scandal of the novel but, stripped of its sentimentality, we find ourselves swept along by a pulsating and edgy drama. Out of an interminable court case spin three young
Gillian Anderson stars in this dark thriller about a couple that embarks on a violent spree after surviving a gang attack. Driving back from a posh party at a country estate, Alice (Anderson) and Adam (Danny Dyer) find themselves brutally assaulted by a group of hunters. Physically and emotionally devastated by the attack, the tables suddenly turn when they discover the identity of their attackers. This time, it’s their turn to exact the ultimate revenge. The X-Files' Gillian Anderson give! s an impressive performance as a woman obsessed by revenge in this sleek and chilly English thriller by documentary filmmaker Dan Reed. Anderson is top-billed as a Brit businesswoman who invites the rough-hewn tech (Danny Dyer) who's installing her security system to a business party in the country. Slow-boiling sexual tension between the two to an erotic encounter in the woods â€" which is soon undercut by a savage attack by a group of local hunters, who rape Anderson and beat Dyer senseless. As they recover, viewers soon learn that the pair's trauma runs deeper than just the physical level â€" Dyer is emotionally shattered, and Anderson is gripped by a need to repay her attackers with violence more terrible than what they visited upon her. Though the plot occasionally veers into implausible territory, the couple's search for the guilty party â€" and the gruesome fate they have in store for them â€" is unnerving, and made all the more so by Anderson intense turn, which pre! sents a torrent of conflicting emotions raging just below her ! cool, po rcelain surface. - Paul GaitaHOUSE OF MIRTH - DVD MovieMeticulously adapted from Edith Wharton's 1905 novel, The House of Mirth may seem at first to be as dry (and as flat) as pressed flowers, but it's quickly evident that director Terence Davies and X-Files star Gillian Anderson (in a breakthrough film role) have tapped directly into the venality of Wharton's New York society. As the ill-fated socialite Lily Bart, Anderson perfectly conveys the understated wit and craftiness of a woman who knows how to play the game, and yet learns too late that it's loaded with ruthless, unspoken rules. Rising above the traditional crop of "marriageable girls," Lily is desired by any number of men who could ensure her place among the moneyed elite, but she deflects their courtship; lawyer Lawrence Selden (Eric Stoltz) is her true love but, tragically, his modest financial status leads them both into a cycle of unfulfilled romance.

Instead, Lily makes too many assum! ptions about her station, offending her aunt (Eleanor Bron), falling into a financial obligation to a manipulative investor (a curiously apt role for Dan Aykroyd), ostracized by a "friend" (Laura Linney), and refusing help from her most prominent would-be suitor (Anthony LaPaglia). All of these gaffes combine to forge Lily's downfall, and Anderson brilliantly captures the horror and confusion of a woman who is shocked when her expectations are no longer matched by her reality. Lily grows defenseless and dependent, and The House of Mirth evolves from stately reserve to become a devastating portrait of class cruelty. Heavy stuff, to be sure, but expertly crafted and blessed by Anderson's complex and heartbreaking performance. --Jeff ShannonIt has always been recognized as one of Charles Dickens's literary masterworks, but this Bleak House is now fast moving, daring, gripping television. Here is the murder mystery, the love story, the comic genius and the tantali! zing scandal of the novel but, stripped of its sentimentality,! we find ourselves swept along by a pulsating and edgy drama. Out of an interminable court case spin three young people, each seaching for their place in the world. The story moves fast - swirling through a incredible array of characters from passionate young lovers, from an ice-cold aristocratic beauty to a shrewd, relentless detective - until the final thrilling climax. With a screenplay by Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice), Bleak House features a galaxy of major stars from feature film, television and comedy.Andrew Davies isn't much of household name in the U.S., but he's the king of the BBC mini-series. His skillfully adapted scripts for Pride & Prejudice (the beloved Colin Firth version) and many, many more are peerless examples of classic novels done right--cunningly edited and shaped to let all the rich emotion and sharp intelligence spill over with zip and vigor. Bleak House is no exception; it's one of the best Dickens adaptations to date. The mini-series fo! rm allows Dickens' panoramic view, brimming with eccentric characters and complex turns of plot, to sprawl out without losing an iota of suspense or momentum. Two innocent young orphans (Patrick Kennedy and Carey Mulligan) are the potential heirs to a fortune, but their fates are snarled in a monumental legal battle known as Jarndyce and Jarndyce. But the heart of the story is another orphan, Esther Summerson (Anna Maxwell Martin), whose mysterious parentage proves to be intertwined with the fate of the Jarndyce wards and the aloof Lady Dedlock (Gillian Anderson, The X-Files). Dickens' story twines through an excoriating vision of the legal system to heartbreaking domestic drama to a murder investigation to near-Gothic horror, all broken into utterly delicious half-hour segments (after the hour-long opening episode). Martin is utterly beguiling, homely at one moment and luminous the next; Anderson's grippingly eerie and brittle performance will delight her fans. But! to single out anyone seems absurd, because every character--f! rom the vicious lawyer Tulkinghorn (Charles Dance, White Mischief) to the foppish parasite Skimpole (Nathaniel Parker, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries) to the simpering clerk Guppy (Burn Gorman)--is intricately drawn, all hitting a mesmerizing balance between caricature and stark emotional honesty. Bleak House demonstrates that humor, pathos, and social criticism can all be contained in one wonderfully entertaining package. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description
"See that moon up there?
You can reach that high.
Never be afraid because you can be anything you want to be."

Susan Lucci was only five years old when her father shared these encouraging words with her. They inspired the highly imaginative child who loved make-believe to craft one of the most enduring characters in television history, an achievement that would earn her a record twenty-one Emmy nominationsâ€"the most for an actor in the award's historyâ€"and the crown as "Leading Lady of Daytime."

When Lucci and All My Children were introduced to the world in 1971, American television changed forever. Susan's character, the beautiful, spirited, and mercurial Erica Kane, was an originalâ€"the first vixen viewers loved to hate. But while millions have enjoyed getting to know Erica's many s! idesâ€"and have been awed at how this character has continuall! y remade herselfâ€"the woman who plays her has remained a mystery.

In her long-awaited memoir, this very private actress, wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, friend, and entrepreneur pulls back the curtain to reveal her story.

Susan, like Erica Kane, has undergone a metamorphosis many times. All My Life shares the stories of those transformations: starring in roles on television and stage, where she took Broadway not just by storm but "by tsunami" as one critic raved about her performance in Annie Get Your Gun; mounting successful cabaret acts (solo and with Regis Philbin); bringing art and joy back to New York in the wake of 9/11; conquering the tango with Tony Dovolani on ABC's hit show Dancing with the Stars; and building a successful career as an entrepreneur with a signature line of products.

Susan goes beyond her success to talk about the darker moments, too, including the childhood guilt she harbored over the death o! f her dear grandmother, the car accident that nearly took away her career and her eyesight, her newborn son's life-threatening illness, coping with her husband's cancer, and the pain of miscarriageâ€"one of the many parallels between her Erica Kane.

As charming, down-to-earth, and compelling as the woman whose story it tells, All My Life shines a spotlight on one of our most popular stars and reminds us of the power of dreams and how we can find the courage and tenacity to make them come true.

Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live) and Selma Blair (Legally Blonde) bring their comedy talents to the sassy and fashionably funny series Kath & Kim. Kath (Shannon), a foxy 40-something, and Kim (Blair), a self-absorbed suburban princess, are forced to reevaluate their hilariously askew mother-daughter relationship when Kim moves home after just a few weeks of marriage. Join them in every fun Season One episode as they aspire to be just like the pop culture celebrities they love while dealing with th! e more down-to-earth men in their lives. Based on the successful Australian series of the same name comes this hilarious, tongue-in-cheek look at relationships that has plenty of outrageous style to spare! The American version of Kath & Kim, based on the wildly successful Australian sitcom, owes as much to its talented lead actresses, Molly Shannon (Kath) and Selma Blair (Kim), as to its witty premise, and the combination makes the series a lovely guilty pleasure.

Mother (Kath) and daughter (Kim) are obsessed with celebrity culture and fancy themselves celeb wannabes in their own mall-centric world. Both actresses have perfected the red-carpet catwalk, for instance, with the perfect hair-toss, which nobody but each other--and the viewer--really notices. One of the best bits about the two leads is their penchant for mangling words as they put on airs (think Archie Bunker meets Married with Children…). The malapropos alone make the series worth watching. In ! making some silly point, Kath declares, in her closing line: "! Ipso fat so." Argument won. But if Kath and Kim are shallower than the Los Angeles River, they do have big hearts underneath--which gives the series its balance.

Extras include deleted scenes, a gag reel that's truly over-the-top, and spot-on commentary by stars Shannon, Blair, Mikey Day, and John Michael Higgins, as well as the show's executive producers and writers. A lot of talent goes into making these women so perfectly dim. --A.T. Hurley "From Todd Solondz, the critically acclaimed director of Welcome to the Dollhouse comes a film comprised of two separate stories set against the sadly comical terrain of college and high school, past and present. Following the paths of its young hopeful/troubled characters, it explores issues of sex, race, celebrity and exploitation. Todd Solondz, director of the acclaimed Welcome to the Dollhouse and the controversial Happiness, continues pushing the envelope of social decorum with the merciless and casually cruel S! torytelling, his most ruthless satire of suburban complacency. Broken into two unrelated chapters, "Fiction" follows college girl Selma Blair through a degrading encounter with her resentful writing teacher (Robert Wisdom), while the more sprawling and scattershot "Non-Fiction" circles around the mutual exploitation of a fumbling documentary filmmaker (Paul Giamatti doing a near-parody of director Solondz) and his clueless subject, a suburban high school slacker named Scooby (Mark Webber). The squirmy laughs are laced with humiliation and the satire is acidic and cynical; in the world of Solondz, victims and victimizers alike are petty, selfish, vindictive, and thoughtless, and empathy is strictly rationed. Though sharply written and well directed, this misanthropic vision is strictly for daring filmgoers and Solondz fans. --Sean AxmakerLegally Blonde Reproduction Poster Print Double Sided 11 x 17 Inches - 28cm x 44cm
